How GreenTek Helped a Fortune 50 Retailer Streamline ITAD Across 1,150+ Locations

Challenge

A Fortune 50 retailer sought GreenTek's help after experiencing significant frustrations with previous ITAD projects. Issues such as chasing vendors for payment and organizing scattered reporting were common. They needed an R2v3-certified ITAD partner capable of managing a complex, nationwide ITAD process while providing exceptional client experience, transparent reporting, secure handling of their assets, and timely payment.

Managing IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) for a large enterprise involves significant complexity. Coordinating operations across hundreds of locations with multiple team members is a monumental task. For large businesses, protecting their reputation and values is crucial. They need vendors with expertise in handling sensitive customer data and potentially hazardous e-waste. Projects of this magnitude involve considerable risk, especially when dealing with multiple vendor teams.

Solution

GreenTek devised a strategy to streamline the ITAD process, transferring 20,000+ assets from 1,150+ locations to 15 centralized hubs using the retailer’s trucks. This approach allowed GreenTek to pay the client for the equipment instead of charging for logistics and transport.

Utilizing GreenTek’s proprietary dashboard and software, ITADERP, all stakeholders had real-time access to a centralized system that monitors project progress. This system provides detailed reports on weight, certificates of recycling, inventory, revenue share, and more. GreenTek also ensures on-demand ESG and Data Sanitization reporting, status reports, and manages change or challenges throughout the process.

Execution

Throughout the ITAD process, the client experienced a significant improvement compared to their previous vendors. With a single point of contact at GreenTek and a client representative at each of the 15 locations, there was clear accountability and efficient communication.

GreenTek maximized the sale price of the assets, allowing the client to generate revenue from their aged equipment. Assets arriving at GreenTek HQ were inventoried, added to the ITADERP, successfully underwent data sanitization and testing, and were securely stored with authorized access only.

Following R2v3 standards and data handling best practices, GreenTek securely managed millions of sensitive customer records. Data-containing equipment was locked in secure cages with state-of-the-art access control and monitored by CCTV systems. Any data that couldn't be erased due to the age or functionality of the device was physically destroyed and sent downstream for material recovery in keeping with the circular economy and GreenTek's zero-landfill policy for e-waste.

Outcome

Within eight months, all computer and point of sale assets were inventoried, sanitized, tested, cleaned, and ready for resale, generating substantial revenue for the client. What initially seemed a challenging ITAD project turned into a smooth, revenue-generating process.

This project yielded significant environmental benefits as well. Of the 114,000 pounds of assets for reuse and/or material recovery, greenhouse emissions were reduced by more than 158,900 pounds, diverting more than 3,250 pounds of toxic metals from landfill, equivalent to removing 32 cars from the road annually, and saving more than 1,430,576 kWh of electricity.

The cohesive strategy and streamlined approach allowed the client to consolidate assets across hundreds of locations within the project timeline. Following this successful project, GreenTek and the client continue their collaboration with bi-weekly pickups around the country, generating ongoing revenue and environmental and stakeholder benefits through a long-term relationship.
